2、n. As a research topic, since 1970s, code-switching has attracted attention from many various research fields. Code-switching has been studied from grammatical, sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, conversational analysis

3、and pragmatic approaches and great achievements have been obtained. This paper sets out to provide a tentative analysis of code-switching between Chinese and English in Amy Tan’s famous work--- The Joy Luck Club. In this

4、 novel, some characters, especially those Chinese mothers, frequently engaged in code-switching in their conversation. Two theoretical frameworks, which are Yu Guodong’s Adaptive Model and Myers-Scotton’s Markedness Mode

5、l, will be employed to analyze the motivations and functions of code-switching. This paper is to explore how speakers of different generations, who clearly have different proficiency levels and preference of languages, u

6、se code-switching to manage their different views and opinions. And how those parents and children use code-switching to construct and reconstruct their socio-cultural roles, positions and expectations. Through the stud

7、y and analysis of several typical code-switching instances in this novel, conclusions are reached: The occurrence of code-switching in this novel is influenced by many factors, such as linguistic, social and psychologica

8、l factors and generally speaking, code-switching functions as an effective communicative strategy used by the communicators to meet their communicative intentions. And language choices also carry social and cultural mean

9、ing, so code-switching used by those immigrants’ mothers represents their mixed social and cultural identities. The structure of the present paper is as follows: it begins with a brief introduction and highlights the pu
